Cabin Fever -Ode to Crow Lake

As winter seems to want to hang around a bit longer, I have to say I am starting to get cabin fever. If you are experiencing cabin fever it is time to get out of this slump. You need to start thinking about that vacation and make a reservation so that you have something to look forward to.

I am 51 years old and originally from Wisconsin, my family every year went on vacation to Canada. It was something I really looked forward to every year and I thought about all year. As the time came near I could only imagine the many lakes we would fish, the campfire we would have every night, cooking outdoors, the smell that only Canada seems to have, family time, board games, catching fire flies, catching frogs, staying up way after my bedtime and the experiences we would have as a family. I didn’t need anything to entertain me, I had the outdoors to amuse me and those memories still remain with me. Those memories stayed with me enough that I purchased a resort in Canada with my husband and my family. We have been here for 14 years and I now look forward to seeing you with your family and sharing my experiences with you. We now have 7 grandchildren that spend their summers at Muskie Bay Resort and I have to say that I love that they look forward to all the things I did as a kid on vacation in Canada.

Canada is still a remote, secluded, affordable and safe place to take your family. But it isn’t all about family,Paul this time of year, when he can’t get out to fish or work on his outside projects. Paul, looks at what he can purchase to catch that trophy fish that only Canada still seems to possess. He goes on line and dreams of the latest newest equipment and looks forward to open water. For Paul Canada is about the challenge and the endless hours of fishing.

Ode to Crow Lake was a poem written by Peter Albright. Peter Albright is a previous owner of Muskie Bay Camp. I love the poem and wanted to share with you what I have a hard time putting into words; Peter found and wrote them in a poem.

Ode to Crow Lake
By Peter Albright
There is a lake – with countless islands that are nameless.
And the inlets and bays all run heaven knows where;
Where shiner minnows and chubs dart through the beaver dams,
And Northern, Bass and Muskie spawn.
There is a lake-with forests unspoiled and still,
Where the blue waters are so cold and deep
sparkling in the sunlight so clear and clean;
Where schools of lake trout challenge a fisherman’s skill.
Just drifting or trolling with thoughts all his own,
With crows breaking the silence with loud raucous calls.
There is a lake-where graceful gulls wing their endless flights;
Screeching and squabbling over discarded delights,
While the fisherman enjoys his tasty shore lunch;
Stretches his legs with hat over his eyes or picks enough blueberries for a couple of pies,
With blazing sunsets you wouldn’t believe
And the loon’s lonesome call breaks the stillness of eve.
There is a lake-Oh! How it beckons and calls;
I want to go back to Crow Lake-
And I will.

Still Ice fishing 3-23-2013

We are in still in full icefishing mode. This season has been difficult with cold and warm fronts coming in continuously, with slush one day and great ice the next. Many trophy fish have been caught, there has not been a rhyme or a reason for the big fish being caught. I have used glow tubes, pink pearl pepper tubes, Vibrato, etc. I have fished shallow as 10 ft to 70 ft and have got fish or not. But if you love fishing as much as I do, you are out for the challenge and the adventure of catching a monster fish or perhaps dinner. I believe you can’t catch fish sitting on the couch, so the more holes you drill and the more time you put in is the answer to catching fish. You can’t tell my grandson Devin that, I have taken him out 3 times this winter and within minutes he has caught a fish, and not just a fish a few monster fish. I am afraid to taken him out sometimes that he will be disappointed in my abilities to find him fish. So, we are not all  7, we realize that it is just fishing. So, if you are looking for a challenge and perhaps an adventure, I hope you get a chance to still see me on the ice.

March 2013 Ice Fishing

Ice fishing is still going strong, we have about 3 more weeks of ice fishing left.  We have had an abundant amount of snow and ice this year, which we needed because of the water being so low this past year. It has been an amazing ice fishing season with some of the largest trout, pike, bass and muskie caught.

January 20, 2013 Ice conditions.

Well, this past weekend has been cold. The cold weather has froze everything up and the conditions for traveling across the ice are great. Getting back into Rowan and some of the portage lakes are good we have enough snow to travel across the portages. I still think snowmobiles work the best but some have brought 4-wheelers and are getting around. I suggest if you have chains for your 4-wheeler bring them with. We caught a few crappies but they were smaller this week than last weeks catch. We are excited about this upcoming weekend it is our annual Thorne Bros. ice fishing extravaganza. If you still want to get in on it we still have opening. I am heading out right now to do some prefishing/scouting before the outting. Give us a call.

And I will see you on the ice.

Come on up the water is hard!!

Well the ice fishing season has officially started. It has started with a bang with my grandson Devin fishing for lake trout and what a surprise for him and myself when he pulled out a 45 inch muskie and then right after the muskie he caught a 26 inch lake trout. Devin caught his muskie

It isn’t all about lake trout or even muskie, Donny caught this 44 inch pike. Donny has been coming up to Muskie Bay Resort for the past 13 years and he has this awesome ability to catch fish.

So, come on up the water is hard !!

Many Seasons!!

We experience many seasons at Muskie Bay Resort and I enjoy them all. I prepare myself and look forward to getting ready for each. Getting out my favorite rods and reel for each species of fish.

Ice fishing is on its way, we are currently watching ice being made. I am preparing my snowmobiles and ice fishing equipment getting out my Hummingbird, Vexilar and the Strike Master. I am looking forward to purchasing the new Honda powered Strike Master this year.

When the ice melts and spring is on its way I look forward to the song of the Loons and frogs. I love the smell of the trees ,the fresh smell of rain, the warm summer sun, open water and the endless possibility of catching trophy fish.

As each season arrives, I look forward to hunting season the most. It has its rewards, as we approach fall I prepare for the hunt. I schedule myself many hours of scouting in the secluded remote bush. This year we have added trail cameras to our arsenal. It was exciting to catch monster bucks on the camera and then with in a week we harvested that buck.  Our hunting season was a lot of fun with many trophy deer.

Now that the election is finally over we can look forward to the economy to get better and the uncertainty has been lifted. We can start planning for our entitled vacation with still keeping things on a budget.  A trip to Canada is still an affordable vacation with seclusion, beauty, shore lunch, bonfires, star gazing, sport activity, family vacation.

As we approach the holidays I reflect on what I am thankful for. I wish to express my thanks to my guests and my family for a wonderful year. I have been so blessed with the chance to be able to serve those that come to Muskie Bay Resort.  This is my wife Chris and my 14th year of running Muskie Bay Resort and we look forward to many more.
