Five guided days, and every one of them starts at the dock rather than a road.
You leave camp in the dark with your guide and run out across the lake. The stands are already hung and the ground has been scouted before you arrive, so the first morning is a hunting morning, not a setup morning. That matters on a five day hunt, where losing two days to scouting is losing forty percent of your trip.
This is low-pressure country. Water does the work that a locked gate does elsewhere, and the deer here are not being pushed around by trucks and four-wheelers. It also means your guide's knowledge of which shoreline and which ridge is holding deer is worth more than any amount of map study.
You come back to the Lodge for meals and a real bed, not a tent. Hot tub, sauna and the fire pit patio are there at the end of the day, and daily maid service means your gear dries and you do not.
Licences, tags and what to expect.
Ontario hunting rules are strict and they differ for non-residents, so it is worth getting this right early.
You will need an Ontario Outdoors Card, the appropriate deer licence and a deer tag. Season dates and permitted weapons are set per Wildlife Management Unit and differ between residents and non-residents of Canada, which is why we confirm your exact window with you before you book rather than publishing one set of dates that may not apply to your hunt.
Hunter orange is required during Ontario gun seasons. Bring your own rifle or bow and be ready to declare firearms at the border on the way in, which our guide to crossing into Canada explains step by step. What does the whitetail deer hunt package include?
Six nights and five fully guided days at $2,200 USD per person. Boat-in access to pre-scouted areas each morning with stands already placed, lodging, all meals at the Lodge, daily maid service and a fishing package so you can fish on off days or evenings. What does boat-in access actually mean?
Your guide runs you out by boat each morning to ground you cannot drive to. That is the whole point of hunting here. The country around Crow Lake and Lake of the Woods is broken up by water, so a boat reaches stands that see almost no other hunters. You are not walking in behind someone else at first light.
When is the season?
Ontario deer seasons are set by Wildlife Management Unit, and the dates differ for residents and non-residents of Canada, as does which weapon you may use. What licence and tags do I need?
An Ontario Outdoors Card, the appropriate deer licence and a deer tag, all issued by the Ontario Ministry. Requirements differ for non-residents. We walk you through exactly what to buy and when after you book, so nothing is left to the last week.
Can I fish on the same trip?
Yes, and it is included rather than an upsell. A fishing package comes with the hunt, so evenings and slow middays can be spent on the water. Plenty of guests treat it as the reason to bring a non-hunting partner along.
What should I bring?
Warm layers you can hunt in from a stand rather than on the move, quality waterproof boots, and the hunter orange Ontario requires during gun seasons. Bring your own rifle or bow, ammunition or arrows, binoculars and a headlamp. Lodging, meals and the stand are handled.
